I take your point about the constraint coming from a certain strata of the British population. Thinking about Bob Geldof's passion at Live Aid, and Niel Kinnock's or John Prescott's passion at their respective Conferences - they weren't taking a self conscious stance, and filtering their behaviour through the pursed lips of the constrained. I also know of the passion of ideas expressed through the liberation of drink! On second thoughts constraint has its place!

I find that among my aquaintances and friends passion is something that the English middle classes rather than the British(as a nation and not a tribe) tend to be embarrassed about. Coming from a family with celtic roots and strongly working class Passion was something of a lifestyle encompassing dancing, religion and politics.
